Most rooftop venue tours focus on the view. The questions that actually determine whether your event goes smoothly rarely come up unless you ask them directly, and by the time they surface on their own, it’s usually the week of the event.
Questions for the Venue
- What time does the building’s noise ordinance require amplified sound to stop, and is that enforced by building security or local authorities?
- Is there a covered or indoor backup space available in the building if weather forces the event to relocate?
- What’s the freight elevator size and weight limit for equipment load-in, and is there a service entrance separate from guest access?
- Is event power available as a dedicated drop, or does production need to plan for generator power?
- Are there restrictions on rigging or anything suspended from the roof structure, and does the building require its own engineering sign-off?
Questions for the Production Company
- Have you produced an event at this specific building before, or do you need to schedule a site visit first?
- What’s your weather contingency trigger point, and who makes that call in real time?
- How do you handle sound design around a noise ordinance cutoff, meaning what happens to the evening’s energy after the cutoff hits?
- What backup power do you carry on site if the primary drop or generator fails mid-event?
Why This Order Matters
Asking the venue questions first tells you what constraints exist. Asking the production company questions second tells you whether they’ve actually worked within those constraints before or are hearing about them for the first time on your call. Both answers matter, but the second one is the better filter for who you actually book.
